Auckland Council (AC) is understandably reluctant to get involved in projects on private land. I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve been turned down for funding for my backyard Kelly Slater wave pool. So we are super pumped that the Franklin Local Board (FLB) of AC recognises the importance of the Whitford forest in the physical, mental and social wellbeing of Aucklander’s and have come to the Maraetai Restoration Project party to the tune of $40 000!! Special thanks to Malcolm Bell and Angela Fulljames of the FLB, AC and Rose Ward of Parks, Sport and Recreation, AC for their help with this. As part of the funding agreement AC would like us to encourage more non-biking people into the forest. To facilitate this we have agreed to lower our annual subscriptions from next financial year for runners and walkers to $25 per person, $50 for a family. This will allow access to the forest roads and bike up-tracks but not to the bike down-tracks. They would also like us to get more young women into biking. PCBC has a pretty proud record of junior women excelling in biking so we’re cool with that!
On the track building side of things Greg and Richie's new track down to Comfortably Numb is finished and ready to rumble. It's a cracker. Cruisy Grade 3 if you’re just going for a dawdle, but if you’re in EWS Eddie Masters beast mode there’s lots of small jumps, step downs and step ups to trip you up big time so be careful the first few times. The TrailPro boys have started on the new Ground Effect-another winner winner chicken diner being served up there. Grenade has a new line half way down; it's always been grade 4, be on the case, roots and all, sort of track and the new line is more interesting and flows so you shouldn’t need to check it out first. Just pull the pin and ride. ... See MoreSee Less
