Tadpoles! The forest water reservoirs are full of tadpoles at the moment. Great pets for the kids over the next few months-just need a container and some fish food. Once they become frogs they are a hassle -only eat live insects and have a tendency to disappear and you find them decomposed under the couch a week later or the cat has a strange contented look. So best to release them back into the wild! Best place to catch them is in the pond/reservoir past entry to Ground Zero. I've left a fish net there but you may still need to get your feet wet . Still no word from forestry re closure but cant be far away..
FOREST STATUS: No word from forest management over the Xmas break so not sure when they will close Maraetai for the planned logging. Usually they bring in the roading machinery first. We were told sometime around Jan 6 but in lieu of the official email/sign on the gate it remains open at this stage. All that will change at short notice and probably soon so get into it while you can.
